During my stay in Okayama University, I studied in University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, USA ( 11/93-12/94 and 1/96-2/96), and in University of California, San Diego, CA, USA, (2/96-3/96), supported by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Japan.

Research Interests (Key words)

Aquaporins; CO2 transport; Plant cellular and molecular responses to the environmental stress; Plant ion transport; Plant water transport; Root structure and function; Salt stress and salt tolerance in plants;

Aquaporins

Aquaporins facilitate water transport across biomembranes. The discovery (1992 in erythrocyte and 1993 in plants) of aquaporins has facilitated research on intracellular and whole-plant water transport at the molecular level. I and collaborators identified and analyzed many aquaporin genes in barley. We also showed some aquaporins permeate carbon-dioxide in addition to water.
