Facing agricultural issues, such like acidic soil, water shortage and pathogenesis, coping with the agricultural issues is strongly expected in East Africa. While the severe poverty and hunger problem has become gradually recovered by the support of the international community, stabilizing society through sustainable food production is still highly demanded in the area. In order to do so, introducing novel cultivation technology for high yield is one of the sought solutions.
During this 3-year program we carry out international human exchange and collaborative research between Japan and East Africa aiming at development of the Future Crops leading for higher yield in East Africa. We have two core institutions, Institute of Plant Science and Resources, Okayama University in Japan and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya.
The Future Crops: rice, wheat and barley that cope with environmental hardiness, are being developed with advanced biotechnologies of Japan. The goal of the program is, by utilizing the stress resistance Future Crop, to improve agronomical production in the land unsuitable for cultivation in East Africa.
