Mourning (Prof. Wangari Maathai)

Ms. Wangari Maathai, a peace activist in Kenya, who became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 passed away in Nairobi on September 25. She is familiar to us as a promoter of Japanese word “Mottainai” to the world and known to be popular nation-wide in her own country, Kenya. We, researchers aiming at sustainable food production in East Africa centering on Kenya, sincerely feel regret over the passing of Dr. Maathai who blazed trails in activities of tree planting for antidesertification and of sustainable development. May her soul rest in peace.
