Title: Early events in plant-insect interactions <\/strong> ABSTRACT: In principle, herbivory combines two different facets of the feeding process: First, the mechanical wounding of the infested tissue and, second, the introduction of oral secretions that is derived from the feeding organism into the wounded tissue; i.e. the attacked plant faces both a mechanical as well as a chemical challenge. Here I we will review our current knowledge on insect-derived compounds that are recognized by the plant and the subsequent signalling early events within the plant. Moreover, I will describe the diverse indirect and direct strategies that evolved in plants to defend themselves against phytophagous insects: from physical factors the attackers have to overcome to the employment of toxic or harmful phytochemicals, which can occur constitutively or after induction of their synthesis. Calcium and ROS signalling will be described along with electrophysiological changes of plants under herbivore attack.<\/p>\n Everyone is sincerely welcome!
